Reliquary Description

A beautiful devotional reliquary with first and second class relics from a variety of saints and a relic from Our Lady of Loreto, which many believe to be the house of The Virgin Mary, which was transported from Palestine to Italy in the Middle Ages. A majestic agnus dei lies in the center, adorned with semi-precious stones, and the whole ensemble sits on gorgeous red velvet. There is gold trim around the frame, and the saints’ names are highlighted in gold leaf. The aesthetic of the gold and pearl over the red is exquisite.

The saints include several who were especially popular around the turn of the twentieth century, and the emphasis seems to be on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, motherhood, love, and the infant Christ. Gemma Galgani, was known as the “Flower of Lucca” and “Daughter of Passion” for her devotion to the Passion of Christ. She would not yet have been beatified when this reliquary was made. Another saint here seems to be St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as Therese of the Child Jesus (Kind Jesusz – K. J.): one of the most popular figures in the Roman Catholic Church of the late 19th century and a prolific writer. St. John Bosco (H. Dom. Bosco- using the Portuguese), was the founder of the society of The Society of Saint Francis de Sales. Gerard Majella also was beatified and canonized around the turn of the century as is known as the patron of mothers. Other saints seem to include St. Valentine, St. Margaret Marie Alacoque, and a St. Francis (though which St. Francis is not entirely clear).

This is really a beautiful reliquary, and one gets a sentiment of yearning and the aspirations of a young woman from it. Several of the saints are women who died young, and several are associated with the joys, sufferings, and longings of young women and mothers. The red and gold capture precisely the feelings of love and the heart, which lie at the center of the work of devotion.

This piece is a marvel of artistic collage as well as a reliquary and will serve as an object of decoration in any room as well as an object that expresses devotion.
