Reliquary 5 Relic St. Illuminata, St Francis Assisi, St Augustine
Circular reliquary from the XIX Century with the Holy Relics of several founders of major orders along with a homage to St. Illuminata, who was an early Christian martyr and eremite from Ravenna, and St. Benedicta (probably of Assisi), who was the successor of St. Clare among the Poor Clares, and who led, by all accounts, an exemplary life. The top of the reliquary is broken and obscures two of the names except for a couple of letters. The missing names are likely those of Jerome (Hieronymus) and Augustine.
Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Benedicta of Assisi
Saint Illuminata
Saint Augustine of Hippo?
Saint Ilegible (Hieronymus ?)
Circular framed reliquary from the 19th Century produced in a humble style that befits a monastic nun or friar who is sworn to poverty. The white paperolle background is laced with some decorative tissue to suggest pleasure in simple things and the future rewards that await the devout. The hand-carved wooden case fits neatly in the pocket to serve as a constant reminder of the most exemplary of saints that the nun could imagine. The inclusion of St. Illuminata among this illustrious cast is touching and indicates real affection for the example that this woman established. In handling this piece, one touches the sympathies and aspirations of the sister as she goes about her daily chores, cherishing those who came before her and reminding herself always to follow their example.
Condition
Good overall condition with damage to the top of the wooden case and a missing section.
