Christ Pantocrator, Tempera on wood, Russian Old Believer Icon, 19th Century

A 19th century egg tempera on wood, Russia icon of Christ Pantocrator. A remarkable piece very well preserved in a hand-crafted frame by the late 19th century Belgian framer, Thomas Pestelacci. The artfully designed frame matches golds, tans, and browns perfectly to highlight the artistry of the icon and adds significant appeal to the work. Pestelacci’s certification of his craftsmanship serves to date and authenticate the painting as well.
This is a fascinating work. The hand symbols and portrayal of Christ signify that the artist was an old believer who did not approve of the reforms that Patriarch Nikon of Moscow introduced in the late 17th century. You will notice that Christ’s right hand has two fingers folded in on the thumb. This is the fashion in which the Old Believers made the sign of the cross. The artist is also very deliberate in his depiction of Christ’s visage, so as not to depict Christ as Western or modern.
Many Old Believers disapproved of the encroachment of Western style on Eastern Orthodox icon paintings. Despite the conservative disposition of the artist, this icon does incorporate several elements of Western style. There is some perspective here, and the robe is done in great detail to show movement and flow. Our artist is also a master in egg tempura painting. The illusion of depth that he creates through the application of many layers is exceptional.
This is a very fine piece that displays the intersection of East and West. The thoughtful incorporation of Western elements into Eastern style that preserves the distinctive character of Russian Orthodox icon painting makes this painting a fine adornment for any chamber or a unique addition to any collection.
